Optimal Incentives

To create a sustainable energy system strong and general incentives are necessary. Svebio strongly supports the Polluter Pays Principle (PPP). Fossil fuels must carry the burden of the environmental costs they cause, today and in the future. It is important that the environmental incentives are general, long-term, and stable, as well as technology neutral. We strongly prefer a carbon dioxide tax on all emissions of carbon dioxide of fossil origin. Download our paper - Carbon tax a cure for budgets and environment!

In Sweden we also use other general incentives in sectors where carbon taxation is not possible, or where Sweden cooperates with other countries. In the transport sector there is tax exemption for bio-fuels, and for electricity production there is a green certificate system for renewable electricity production. As an E U member state, Sweden is also part of the European Emission Trading System, primarily for large-scale industry and electricity production using fossil fuels.

Direct supports, subsidies, on top of the general incentives, should be avoided. Direct support can, however, be used for research and development, and to demonstrate and introduce new renewable technologies.
